Experiencing difficulties using your card at restaurants, salons, hotels, or gas stations? Here are some helpful tips for using your gift card at establishments that may impose a pre-authorization charge on the card.
This is a common occurrence at many restaurants, gas stations, and hotels. When utilizing a pre-paid card at these types of establishments, an extra charge is often automatically applied to your total to ensure that adequate funds are available on your card.
Typically, this supplementary charge is refunded to the card's balance within 7 to 10 business days if the purchase is successful. If the merchant requests authorization for an amount greater than the available card balance, the purchase will be declined. In most cases, the merchant is unaware of this additional charge and is unable to prevent it.
When using your prepaid card at places like restaurants, hair salons, food delivery services, or any other establishments that commonly accept tips, an additional percentage, usually 20%, may be added to your bill. This is done to guarantee sufficient funds on your card in case you wish to add a tip after your card is swiped. If no tip is added, the extra 20% will be refunded to your card's balance within a few days. We recommend requesting the merchant to process the card for 20% less than the total amount.
Furthermore, an extra authorization charge may be applied to your bill when using your card at a hotel or car rental establishment. If there are inadequate funds on your card to cover this charge, the transaction will be declined. In the event of a successful transaction, the additional charge will be refunded to your card within 30 business days.
